Please see below message from our President, Scott Hoffman addressing the current port congestions.
Please consider this update as an attempt to inform you on the delays we are experiencing in exports and imports via New York ports and how it potentially is or will be affecting your shipments.
Please pardon the over simplification of the background information. Much cargo has been diverted over the last few months from the West Coast ports to New York to avoid the congestion that was on the West Coast due to the labor dispute. Add to that; carrier overbookings, trucker and equipment shortages, computer shut downs, weather related disruptions, and staff shortages. The congestion is causing long traffic lines causing wait times in some cases over 6 hours to get a single container off the pier.
The congestion is resulting in trucker overtime charges. Demurrage and detention charges are also a result, and especially if import containers involving FDA and or USDA reviews and inspections.
Currently there are no plans to extend hours or gate times to alleviate the congestion, and the information the terminals are providing is not always the most reliable or current information. We are trying to provide the most accurate information on status as soon as we are able, and continuing to try to verify as much as possible.
Please be advised of the potential for additional costs and delays and be guided accordingly.
